Howdy All,
I’m the new Community Content writer here at Cryptic Studios and I can’t tell you all how incredibly fun that is.
Once upon a time, I was an English professor – which is actually a pretty good gig if you can get it. However, I’ve been a sci-fi and fantasy geek, a comic book reader, a Star Trek fan, and a writer for a lot longer. So, you can understand why writing for both the Champions Online and Star Trek Online communities would be a dream come true. I get to write about superheroes, and read about Romulans, and play video games for my job. I have to say, that beats grading papers any day.
I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone and sharing the awesomeness of Champions Online and Star Trek Online. It’s going to be fun!
P.S. Yes, I might correct your grammar.
P.P.S. Yes, it’s okay for you to correct my grammar.
P.P.P.S. No, I do not think Romeo and Juliet was a particularly good example of Shakespeare’s work. Too schmaltzy.

Congrats on your appointment :)
Outta curiosity, what classes did you teach as an English professor?
I'm currently an English major in training to be a high school English teacher, and after finishing my first semester at college, I realized how much I hate learning about middle English writing :P. Y'know, like Anglo-Saxon to 18th century stuff. It sounds like it'd be a blast to have a professor who shares some interests with me, haha.
Anyway, it's really cool to know that having a teaching degree in Engllish may open up more career options than just being a teacher :)

Isn't it jolly bad form to have post post scripts? Surely one P.S. to encompass them all would be better! Although, to be pedantic, a P.S. is latin not English, but there we go... :D

Good morning!
Eburk -- I've taught English Lit, Tech Writing, Creative Writing, and all levels of Composition. I've also taught a few one day seminars on playwriting and critiquing. Believe me, being a good writer and having a strong background in English can actually prepare you for a huge variety of different jobs. You just have to be willing to find them, since the job path isn't always obvious.
Lance_Maddison -- I do, indeed, write community content ;) Hope you don't mind that I quoted your phrasing over at the STO forums, too. Among other things, I write up the news and announcements for the Cryptic Studios websites, I do interviews with the team, I get to write character profiles, origin stories, some snippets of fiction set in the world of the game, and I help with the game manual. That last one has actually been a lot more fun than you'd think. I may also help with some in-game content.
Snodge - It's okay to have post post scripts, so long as you're using them ironically :D
Hope you're all having a great weekend!

I hope you do. Most forums are lousy with bad grammar, and for some reason people get offended when I correct them. ;)

... I have to say I prefer King Lear for the tragedies and Twelfth Night for the comedies. Although Tempest and Midsummer's Night are also fond favorites.
And Robota, it's totally fine for you to make fun of me for being in the arts - and I can do the same for you being in the sciences - so long as we both agree that we love gaming.
People with English degrees are just generally better human beings than others. It's a science. You can't argue with it.

P.P.P.S. No, I do not think Romeo and Juliet was a particularly good example of Shakespeare’s work. Too schmaltzy.
The Taming of the shrew, and MacBeth are much finer works... no?
When, in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries
And look upon myself and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possess'd,
Desiring this man's art and that man's scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate;
For thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings
That then I scorn to change my state with kings.
Congratulations on changing your state with Kings, good sir!

Yes but the o, s and e are so close on KB..and if you play FPS they wear off; to edit[ ed.punctuation added ]is so tedious :D
I think my KB does it to me so i don't win essays... Beside english is to too two and even my computer thesaurus needs me to give it new words... Like "Batastic" and Senshi says ...we need a red felt[felt] pen software programme..for fresh En comp [so fingers remember which letter comes next]
Remember Star Trek when Kirk and Spock go to MUDDS Planet and confuse the Androids?
I am the Bird that twitters in the night and fries my PC Thesaurus...hey maybe that's my Power
Raise up and Attribute and Display a Aspect of utter confusion... I am not SenshiBat I am just the wind cant catch the wind.. maahaa
Oh yes topic focus.. Every good writer needs a better editor.. :)
very sorry had too many windows open just saw the thread..Title..my Bad
Alivet You and the whole team are zany like the STO crowd in Meet Dan... So you write Duh?
How about a Quiz?
Robots pirates or Monkeys? Like they do on the other side of Cryptic?
OR in the Lair of Cryptic CO? Like the Myth Adventures Book each of you do a variation on the same theme..

Welcome :)
But let me say here that teaching can be a pleasure too. And I'd go for the Midsummer night's dream as my favorite play. Just a personnal choice though.
Concerning you're present work Alivet, will the CO quests be of a non linear architecture ?
Will the choice you take during an adventure change the course of events of the next one for exemple ?

That's pretty exciting. I'm a writer myself....advertising.
Being a content writer for a game is always something I've tossed around in the back of my mind but I'm afraid I'm too old and too far up the corporate ladder at this point to switch careers. Still, it's exciting to see someone else do it. Congrats!

I wish I could be a community content writer.... T_T
Anyway, congratulations. Hope to see you in the game sometime. Make good stories for us, 'kay? And if you run out of ideas or have one of those slow days, ask me. Maybe I can give you a jumpstart. (Guy can dream, can't he? =P)

I am a writer as well and I am currently writing for a game "TrinityofTime" I dont know if it will go anywhere as it is just a concept right now, but writing quests is so much fun. The ability to dream anything you want, create characters of vast imagery and to express conceptual art is dizzy playtime. So gratz on living the dream! Its nice to meet you

Welcome Alivet! On behalf of the Champions Online community, I Congratulate you on acquiring your "dream" job and can only hope that I too will one day be in your very position or at least something similar.
So then, is there anything you have recently wrote that I can feast my eyes upon?
Out of personal interest, what exactly were the requirements towards gaining your current place within Cryptic Studios?

This isn't really the place for this...
but to answer your question, the game has not been released. They are Beta testing right now. To attempt to sign up for that, go to Beta Application (http://www.champions-online.com/preview_application). The game, according to Gamestop, has a release date of September 1st.

Romeo and Juliet may not have been Shakespere's best work, but it does have some good qoutes.
