Greetings all! :D
Yes, I too have played City of Heroes and City of Villains. I have been a longtime fan of Super-person roleplaying games (pencil and paper) and the Champions Universe and the Hero gaming system are among my all time favorites. I am a big fan of Hero system in specific due to the endless and infinite possibilities availiable in terms of power creation and customization. I have always thought that the Hero game system would translate wonderfully into an MMO environment, allowing for point-buy character construction and customization.
As such I was thrilled to hear about this project and I shall await, with all the patience I can muster, additional information about it.

Yep, I'm 40, got my first copy of Champions when I was just a teenager, and never looked back. Sure, I've played plenty of other games, had my start with D&D like so many, but Champions and the Hero system hold a special place in my heart and will never ever leave. I fondly remember my characters and adventures, Phaeton/Ultra and Doctor Unusual, my two favorites, will always be with me...as well as memories of fighting a giant inflatable godzilla unleashed on our fair city by one of my best friends, Maurice Beyke, who is no longer with us, but will always be remembered.

I followed City of Heroes since late 2002 (when there were no arch-types and the power list included light projection and density control). I played for about 2 years on and off, and loved the work that Cryptic did.
I am looking forward to Champions Online, even though I have never heard of the PnP rpg, but I love the whole superhero MMO concept.
Can't wait to see what Cryptic has up its sleeves.
allowing for point-buy character construction and customization.
The point-buy system was originally part of COH Alpha, but had to be removed since neophytes to the concept could easily self-gimp themselves to the realm of unsurvivability. From that evolved the current power Primnary, Secondary, Pools advancements in the COX line.
It would be nice to see the Champions point development system used even if it came with the warning that should have been in place for COX Alpha. "You can inadvertently create a character which cannot survive well. If you are just starting out we suggest you use one of the following power template designs."
How the Cryptic team is going to handle the evolution of the point buy system this time will hopefully be better than the forced paths that they ended up with for COX.
Addidtionally there is a thread in the General Forum which is recieving a good deal of long-time COX players posts. You may want to check into that. ;)

I used to play COH and COV a lot and that is how I was initially interested in this formerly MARVEL MMO. As much as I'm a huge Marvel fan I'm glad this is going to not be a licensed comic book character game.

As Jack mentioned in his article, I think the intent here is to use the HERO System's flexibility and customizability as "inspiration." While the Cryptic folx aren't using the HERO System as the rules engine for character creation or game play, I have no doubt from what I've seen that they're going to create an awesome game with customization features that will set new standards!

CoH player here, been playing for two years and still at it. :) Never got the chance to try out the PnP Champions, but this is looking like it'll be pretty cool. I'm intruiged to see what the HERO system and the CRYPTIC engine can achieve!

Ah, yeah. I've played CoX off and on ever since it was released. Hadn't heard of the HERO system until recently, although I'm familiar with Mutants and Masterminds - which is a bit similar.
Very excited to see what Crpytic can do with Champions Online!

Not surprised to see so many former CoX players. Even if the Hero system is only used as an inspiration or a guideline, that still bodes very well I think. When doing game development you can learn a lot of things from existing mechanical systems when working on your own. :D

I bought Champions the summer it came out (my favorite PnP RPG of all time) and have been playing CoX since the 3rd wave of beta (the only MMO I have never canceled my account to). I must admit I have mixed feelings about ChampO but am willing to find out what Jack has in mind.

I got my heroing start with Heroes unlimited, (which didn't really live up to the title in comparison to HERO) and was just introduced to HERO and champions 6 years ago.
I'm just hoping that they use the point based character design (at least as far as powers and stats go) for our characters.
To avoid the self gimping, they could do like anarchy online did and have a "Suggestion" button, where based off of your class or archetype it will suggest how you spend points. that way you can avoid self gimping for the non number crunchers who want to just play, and still allow he customisation that truly marks the HERO system.
(here's hoping for multipowers, power pools might be a bit much to ask for, but a good multipower shouldn't be too hard)

Hello out there Champions fans!
This is really exciting, finally our favorite RPG is going to come to LIFE in Champions Online.
I've been playing Champions since Pacific Origins in 1981 where it was launched by the Hero Games folks. From my first game playing the demo character Hex (A brick), to the second game playing Blue Streak, and moving on to creating my first self-written character in Ice Ram! I played game after game after game at that convention, And started GM'ing them, too!
I got on board with City of Heros in the beta, thanks to having friends whose spouse worked for Cryptic. And I have played it ever since. I have a Level 50 Tanker by the name of Thrillseeker on the Guardian server, and a Level 50 Mastermind by the name of Commander Kitty on the Protector server. And so many more characters on all the servers. I truely suffer from altitius.
I still play Hero System games every other weekend. My most recent characters are Capt Nicholas, captain of the Four Deuce, in a StarHero game, and Professor Rictor aka Doc Justice in our Champions games.
Yes, this means that I, the player, am the grizzled age of 46. But that doesn't stop me. And I look forward into seeing the glorious world of Champions brought to a XBox 360 and PC near me... hmmm.. this may even make me want to finally aquire an XBox 360... hmmmm.

Count me among the "never played Champions, but CoX owns my soul" number. Of course, this here will probably be enough to get me to look into the RPG so that I can get a better idea of what I'm in for once this puppy becomes playable.
Well played, devs.

Post-beta CoH vet and 25 year Champions vet here. Looks like they are going to try to do all the stuff they could not in CoH (power customization, designed arch-nemeses, open powers system). I love CoH, but I'm going to be keeping an eye on this.

I've played CoX off and on for a little over two years. While the game is near and dear to my heart, I can never quite make the hero that I want. My concepts don't quite fit into CoX's AT system. Here's to hoping that this game delivers! It looks promising.

I've never heard of Champions before, but I'm getting my 3-year badge in CoH sometime this week I think. It looks like they took everything they couldn't do/didn't feel like doing with the CoH system and threw it all in here. The graphics look great so far, power customization is always good, and I can't wait to see how combat plays out.

Hey everyone,
I am a Champions player from years gone by. I didn't start in '81, I started with Champions 2 I think. It had a blue cover over a city with three heroes flying into view. A green and yellow hero, a hero with a dark blue and red costume with a white circle on his chest, and a female hero, but I forget what she looked like.
Anyway, I have been playing since about '83 I believe. I was just a teenager then, and it was great. It has gotten better over time, with very few exceptions.
It would be cool if Cryptic can bring back a few old characters, though I am not sure if that is part of their deal. I would love to see Obsidian, and Seeker again. Heck, it'd be great to see the likes of Marksman, Flare, and Rose too, but I am sure that won't happen.
I'll see you all in the game hopefully. Any ideas on when testing will start, and how to get in?

I've been playing CoH/V off and on since Issue 1..., but I'm really looking forward to this game. I figure Cryptic gained a lot of experience with CoH, and will put it to good use here. It also gives them a chance to incorporate things that they wanted to put into CoH, but couldn't.

My original copy of 'Champions' was photocopied from a spiral binder in 1981 from a convention where some guys were playing it off to the side. I've played it ever since.
CoH since beta/pre-release & I like it but of course I am super excited about Champions!
CoX since issue one (and still active) and I've played Champion a time or two as well. I have to say that I was not particularly enthused about Marvel online, but this fills me with excitement. Looking forward to the game.

I first played Champions in 1991, and loved it. After the first session, I borrowed the book and made different characters for a couple days, exploring the options. I was amazed.
I am also a CoX player for 42+ months and am eager to see how Champions Online stacks up. I like what I'm seeing so far, especially the less realistic, more "drawn" feel of the screenshots. Maybe that will keep the framerates up when the screen fills with powers, shrapnel, and combatants.
So, let's see what the year brings!

I'll admit to never playing Champions PnP before, but I've been playing CoH since the US Launch, did the Euro beta and transferred to the EU servers, did the CoV beta too... finally cancelled my account a few months back cos it just wasn't grabbing me any more.... But it's more I think that I wore myself out with Alt-itis, and never did make 50..... Looking forwar dto seeing how things go with Champions Online, and I'll be keeping an eye on Cox, I must admit, to see how they are affected :)
Spent all my time on Defiant, my main heroes were Charnel (Scarpper) and Starr Breaker (Blaster), and Villain wise I mostly played Junkyard Dogg (Brute) with my SG, the Seventh Cabal :)

I'm seeing a lot of old time CoX players. I'm a major noob then I suppose. Just hit my 6 month vet award two days ago, and got my first 50 a few weeks back. I've never played Champions..or any pen and paper RPG.
In any case, the screenshots look awesome, and the idea of no recharge times is...awesome, for lack of a better term. As much as I enjoy CoX, waiting for your two powers to recharge so you can hit again is a bit momentum breaking. This might just be what I'm looking for.

Long-time Champions player, here. I've been playing since Champions II. When I heard thanks to the boys at Penny Arcade that Cryptic's next supers MMO had changed, I had to come take a look. Imagine my surprise when something I never thought I'd see stared me in the face: Champions Online.
I've enjoyed CoH/CoV, having played both since their Beta days. However, every time I'd be power-punching some random Hellion or Tsoo, I secretly wished it was a VIPER agent or a minion of Demon.
Looking VERY forward to this, guys. Keep up with what looks like great work so far.

I played City of Heroes for a couple years after release (and may get back into it soon), and I was certainly interested in hearing what Cryptic's next project would be like. I think it's definitely a great thing that they'll be adding some diversity to the superhero MMO market, and I'm honestly more excited by the idea of a Champions MMO than I was by a Marvel game. I'm definitely going to be paying attention to the news we get about Champions Online, and I can't wait til it's in beta. :-)

I'll admit that I've never played Champions before. My friends and I were always more the D&D type. I have, however known about it for quite a while due to the many fans that it's created over the years. It's just one of those situations where even after I knew about it, I was never able to find any people to game with.
As for CoX: I've been there since beta, and will be there for the foreseeable future. I do think that if Cryptic can bring even half of their ideas for this game along for the ride when it goes into beta that they'll have a very solid and fun game.

I've been playing CoH/CoV since CoH launched, and I've loved every minute of it. The one thing I always wanted from it was more customization of powers. With the recent updates we've been given a little of this. But if Champions can deliver on the power customization, I'm there. I played a little Champions PnP back in the '80s and am really looking forward to this re-imagining.

Long time fan/player of the pnp rpg Champions. Only played CoX in the trial, and didn't continue cas of my system at the time ran it crappy. May have to check it out again the time being. But I willl sure follow this mmo. If they do it justice, I'm all in! Champions was my favorite pnp. The characters creation point system was just ingenious, I would just spend hours creating superheroes. Picking powers, disadvantages, multipowers, etc. The campaign scernarios were written well too. The CO team will have plenty of supervillians, mythos, etc. to pull from and recreate. Does any one remember the The Blood, an alien faction that came here by their hobo/alchoholic leader Pathfinder who was a multi-dimensional teleporter that escaped his own planet with his so called family, here to earth. And the chaos that followed, man loved some of the things they came up with. And the original cover for the manual was an instance draw for me as a kid to play. I'll try to find it if I have it still and post here in the forums. I had one character named Impulse, who had powerful energy punches, but one of his disadvantages was he was a major berserker, and always lost control. So, many great memories of this game, I could go on and on.
My main concerns are 1) give the player full control of their character and his powers, if it's like the point systems, or some similar lvl based system, I'll be stoked. 2) The end game needs to be more than just smash-n- bash to death quests. They need to have the abilities for players to create their own headqaurters with their superfriends and be able to pvp against other superviliians (maybe even a FFA server where you can choose good, evil, neutral, or for self gain), and have destructable buildings to eliminate each others goals and acomplishments. In otherswords, have a wonderful pve system installed but allow character/player pvp immersion be part of the mmo world. To me that's the next gen mmo.

Many of us are cross overs -- I spend 99% of all my board time at www.herogames.com/forums -- so being here is an oddity that likely won't last. But there are a lot of HERO gamers who are also PC gamers (much less than console gamers, as I am). So we'll be in and out of here quite a bit.

I tried just about every superhero pnp game that came out in the 80's. Champions easily emerged as my favorite. I played fourth edition a lot in college and loved the world that they had started developing and fleshing out.
Champions is actually responsible for getting me online for the first time. When I was in college (go Hawkeyes!), I overheard a couple of guys talking about it at a pub. Since I was new to the school, I went over and asked them where I could find a group to play with. They recommended that I go on ISCABBS and check out the RPG forum to find a group. I fumbled my way through making an account, and online communities became a part of my life.
I started playing CoH shortly after it came out (Pinnacle represent!) and was such as fan that I eventually looked for a job with Cryptic. And lo, here I am.

I'm a longtime CoH player. Signed up for the original CoH forums on day 1. Was lucky enough to be in the first beta testing wave and have been a subscriber since release. I love the game!
My friends and I played D&D, but I could never get them interested in Champions. Still, I bought and read several of the source books just for my own entertainment back in the 1980s. I'm getting a refresher course now, having bought the Hero System 5th edition (revised) and Pulp Hero from amazon.com. I bought the Champions book and pdf from the Hero Games site yesterday. :)
I'm really interested in reading about and playing in Millennium City since I was born and raised a Detroiter before moving away a few years go.
It'll take a lot to make me cancel my CoH subscription, but I'm not afraid to play two MMOs at the same time. hehe.

Salutations, caped brethren.
DrMungMung here, evil genius using my evil for good! ..or was it using my genius for twinkies? I don't remember. Anyway, hooray for Cryptic and Champions!! I knew you wouldn't let us down!
I'm a Marvel PnP, Heroes, Champions, Mutants 'n' Masterminds guy from way back before the first seige perilous. Been CoX since beta, playing on Guardian. Rick Summers, Nuclear Summer, Magni, Fryya.
I hereby offer any meagre talents I might possess for free use by the true believers at Cryptic, please use me! :P
That's my 2 cents, if I can help in any way I will, and I don't tend to post a lot unless there's an interesting discussion going on, so if you don't see me, don't think I'm not here. I am!

Hey everyone. I first played Champions sometime in the mid-to-late 80s, it has easily been my favorite RPG. I've played and been subscribed to City of Heroes since open beta. I'm very interested to see how Cryptic leverages their Supers MMO design experience to create this new game.

It was my honor to begin my professional writing and game designing career with Champions. The first book out with my name in it was the original Champions Universe, followed quickly by High Tech Enemies. I also wrote The Mutant File, worked on Allies, Corporations, and many others. I was blessed with the opportunity to shepherd the Champions Universe for a time as its Continuity Editor.
I moved on to other systems and companies over the years, and ultimately wound up developing Shaintar: Immortal Legends (http://brainradio.com/talismanshop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=10&products_id=38) for the Savage Worlds game system.
But I never forgot my Champions days, and I am incredibly excited to join this community and explore this next phase of the Universe I had the honor of shepherding for a while.
(Hey, Jack, if you're reading this... I would very much love to explore helping you out with this on some level!)
I am also a CoH player - Nick Silverwolf, PALADlN, and Valitor Galadrius on the Champion server, where I lead the Paragon City Storm Wardens.
So, yeah... exciting times!

LIke many who've posted, I started with D&D PnP and then discovered Champions in the mid 80's (wow, a game that uses my comic book experience? Count me in!). I have many a fond memory of hanging around neighbors' kitchen tables into the early hours of the morning.
I also remember sacrificing many early Saturday mornings at the local Triple Alliance store for game sessions (about the only thing that could make me get up early!!)
I haven't played Champions in a long, long time, but I did find a box of old character sheets just last week. Talk about good timing... :D
I am extremely excited about what has been revealed so far -- the idea of personal arch-villains is long over-due! It will be great to see what else is being developed as time goes on.

Got a 50 Fire/Stone Tanker on CoH here, along with some other alts and a few villains on CoV.
Personally, I feel like Champions Online is more or less (at least in theory, from what I've read on the site) exactly what CoH was going to be in everyone's minds before it was released.
I followed CoH from pretty much its very start after I saw it on a random preview thing of MMOs on some site I can't even remember now (which was back in 2001 or 2002, not sure).
Anyways, the one thing I wish we could do with this game would be to transfer our characters from CoH/CoV to Champions (with Heroes being the good guys and Villains being your archenemies, etc.).
Now, the chances of this happening are a pipe dream, I know. But if we could just transfer the skins and body builds maybe to the character creator in Champions, it would be so **** awesome. My Tanker is basically everything I've ever wanted my superhero persona to look like, and it feels like all I would do on Champions would be to make a sub-par guy. I don't need his powers or any of that stuff. Just his look.
Oh well, now I got that out of my system :-P
But yeah, CoH/CoV are great games if you can get a good supergroup going and a cool hero to play as, but if you don't have those two key things, then CoH/CoV gets very boring very, very fast. Trust me, I've had a love/hate relationship with CoH/CoV off-and-on for years now (i.e. I get bored and then quit for a few months, then I'm back), so I know how things work with that game, lol.
Here's hoping Champions doesn't fall prey to that major fault.

Quite excited for this. It sounds like it'll be even more fast-paced and dynamic than CoX. This looks to be exactly what CoH was in the very beginning. No Archetypes, just pick the powers you'll enjoy.

Got into CoH during the tail-end of the CoH beta, been playing ever since... but I've always wanted to see something a bit more open-ended, with a more fleshed-out universe and actual dynamic tabletop-esque changes from time to time.
Hopefully, Champions Online will be that game. It's gonna be hard to wrestle me away from CoH, but if anyone can do it, it's probably Cryptic.

A HEROphile since 84, Champions was the first RPG I played. No system has rivalled it since. And though I currently play CoH, I see that subscription not being renewed in anticipation of CO.
I look forward to convincing my current groups to recreate versions of our teams online, to add a new dimension to our games, and merge the univeerse content available in books with what will be here. This will be an amazing resource for me as a GM, not just as a online player.

I've played champions for years, thats why I selected the Champion server to start on in COX. ;) I've most of the other superhero RPG's and champions remains the best of them.
Edit: oh and my avatar is a champions character of mine named Blackdragon. He regularly gets rebuilt and played in many of the campaigns I've played in. The exact origin varies all over the place but often is a bioorganic alien battle suit.

This should promise to be Interesting. A current COX player and an old school Pen and Paper RPG player with some knowledge of the Champions system (Not so much the universe, I'll admit. We always played in our own universes, or ones inspired by the comic books). I have to admit I'm kinda leery about some of the promises here, but also extremely excited to see how it'll work.
Either way, here's hoping it can live up to all it's promises, and more.

I've been subscribed to CoH since release.
To be honest, I've never been much of a comic book reader. When I was growing up, I generaally preferred to read novels instead. I don't even really think I realized that comics were an option. It's strange, because I really love the genre. When I was younger, I used to wake up early just to be able to watch the X-Men cartoon and later Spiderman. I think I could watch Batman (the good one where the characters didn't all look like they were drawn with an artist with a severe aversion to curves) everyday after school. The only comics I can ever really recall reading were the ones I'd read over at a friend's house.
As far as CoH goes, after 4 1/2 years of EverQuest, the prospect of a new genre really interested me. It also came out at a time just as my interest in EQ was (finally) waning. I got into beta and have been playing ever since. Cryptic has always impressed me with how they're willing to try new things, so I'll definitely be here reading all the latest info on Champions.

Champions was the reason I started playing City of Heroes -- well, that and my comic-book-obsessive wife. I found the Enhancement system very reminiscent of power Advantages, so I'm hardly surprised to see this as the next step in the evolution of the superhero Computer RPG.
I was very pleased with the initial City of Heroes offerings (as well as what they decided to cut from the Big Bland Book of MMO Design), so I'm very interested to see how Champions Online evolves.

I used to play CoH/V - I guess I played it 18 months or so.
I have a home P&P group that meets twice a month, and we switch out game systems upon completion of a campaign (typically about once a year) - we had a Champions campaign a couple of years ago using 5E rules. We're doing a Deadlands homebrew variant next then probably back to Hero Systems for a sci-fi campaign (using Star Hero).
I have to admit I'm skeptical about condensing the enormous complexity and customizability of Hero System into an MMO format... but then it's really the atmosphere and players that matter in the end.

i played some Champions back in the day. i've been waiting for a champions video game since i saw the makings of one at a Slugathon game convention YEARS ago (must've been early 90s).
i played tons of CoH, and get that infected feeling sometimes when i hear about updates....but i've become a console gamer for a reason.
CoH is a triumph, but what got me about it was that, while costumes had huge variety, power selection was usually pretty similar among different character builds. i loved the way it played and the experience of earning your first travel power. role-playing was a blast too, but got a little tired after slogging through the same map 20 times farming xp. CoV added some groovy variety, and i put a lot of time into a the keybinds for the mastermind class, which was totally sweet.....
it'll be really challenging to balance out a system as open as Champions. the closest i've seen to a champions game was freedom force, but that wasn't an mmo...it'll be interesting to see how it pans out. i'm really looking forward to this game, especially if it's really coming out on the ps3...

I got into Champions back in the early 90s, and it's been my RPG of choice ever since. Had many great sessions and characters over the years, and some not so good sessions, as I'm sure we all have.
Was lucky enough to get into the CoH beta, and have been playing it ever since. Currently I'm slightly sceptical that Champions Online will beat CoX/kill it off, but I'm quite willing to be proved wrong.

Greetings fellow RPers and MMOers and CoXers, >.>
Been a long time fan and participant of table top RP games, and been suscribed to CoH/CoV since Aug 05, ish, i think... That or I've just got my 30 month vet reward, somewhere near one of them. EU player on Union primarily.
Pyromaniac at heart, so Fire Blaster obviously as the main on CoH, and also Fire throwing themed characters in "other" MMOs.
While I haven't played Champions itself as an MMO, this is interesting me a lot, and I intend to keep a watchful eye on the developements this project goes through, who knows, might end up being what causes me to cancel my CoH account, 2 MMOs being my limit.
Played a few Superhero based RPGs, altho' only in 1-off games, and I can't remember the name of one of them, had the various superpowered individuals broken up into catagories of Alpha, Beta, Gamma, etc, however one of those had been wiped out. Long time ago anyway.
So, hello again, and I shall be watching.

Hey all
Wow! That's all I can say. Just wow!
Long time Champions PnP player here and I originally started playing CoX in the hope it would capture some of that Champions goodness. It turned out to be a great game, but not quite on Champions level. This might be just the game to get my old gaming group back together and bring some of them kicking and screaming into the age of the cRPG :)
I've been chatting with some of my old PnP group and there were some concerns about the Champions system being open to exploit without a human overseer, but hopefully the knowledge Cryptic gained from the free-from character creation during CoH alpha should put them in good standing to do this system justice and keep it nicely playable. A huge assumption on my part I know, but I'm assuming the fact we can design our own nemesis will make this a heroes only game. If so then the system doesn't have to be hampered from a need to balance for PvP.
Anyway, enough rambling. I look forward to many discussions on this tantalising game with you good folks and hopefully a chance to fight evil with you in famous land marks around the world while wearing some very fetching tights.

Hey everyone!
Long time comic book geek here. I'm a CoH/CoV player since the beta days and still playing. My pen and paper RPG history is light, a lot of Dungeons and Dragons, some Gamma Worlds and a lot of Vampire:The Masquerade. I never got to play Champions, but always wanted to. See, I was a tean in the 80's and back then it was really a small group of RPGers in my area so you kind of had to play what the masses were playing.
I'm really looking forward to playing Champions online and hope we FINALLY get the TRUE character customization we all dreamt of with CoH.

I played the Marvel Super Heroes RPG for a few years during the mid 90's. I had heard of Champions and knew a guy who owned the game but never tried playing it (me and my friends were all Marvel fans in those days :p). Later on I got invited to the CoH Beta a couple of weeks before the game went into Open Beta. I've been playing CoH and CoV on and off since then. Currently playing CoH again, trying to actually get a character to lvl 50.
Been playing CoH for a bit over a year now, and a few of my characters there were originally created in Champions many years ago. Needless to say, I'm very excited to hear about this project. :D

I used to play COH and COV a lot and that is how I was initially interested in this formerly MARVEL MMO. As much as I'm a huge Marvel fan I'm glad this is going to not be a licensed comic book character game.
Dunno if you know this EvilAdam, et. al, but the Marvel MMO got the axe sometime this week or last; Microsoft and Marvel said that since it would not "Achieve the same level of success as WoW" (paraphrased), they decided to stop it.
Typical big business mind-set bull@#&%. I could go on a rant about this and Vista being literally shoved down our throats, but I think I'll pass.

First played Champions and other Super-Hero RPGs (most notably, Villians and Vigilantes) since the early 80s (Electron was the name of my main hero, an Energy Projector). I've played AD&D and many others, but I've always enjoyed the "Supers" genre the best - probably because I grew up reading comics.
After I was exposed to Everquest most of my gaming time switched over to MMOs, but I have very fond memories of the "good 'ol days" or tabletop gaming. I'd play Champions again in a heartbeat if I knew a few people who were interested.
I've played City of Heroes since before release and have continued to play it on and off since then. I'm more than just a little looking forward to Champions Online and want to do everything I can to not only promote it but to also throw out suggestions, ideas and do whatever else I can do to help it succeed.

I had to borrow my first copy of Champions just to create a character since there wasn't a RPG store anywhere near us. Eventually, I got someone to buy me a copy of the Color cover Champions softbound.
Anyway, I have been playing Champions off and on since then swapping with other Hero Games PnP genres. (Fantasy Hero, Espionage, Danger International, Star Hero, CyberHero, Western Hero...) But, we always came back to the staple of Champions.
As far as online play, I have been a subscriber and player of CoX and started playing while still in beta.
I am looking forward to a future of Champions Online! If anyone can do this the right way, Cryptic can.
Thanks guys, I can't wait.

Been with CoX since late beta, and I'm still there. As a hardcore-casual player (playing once or twice a week, maybe three time during holidays), I still look foreward for new things all the time.
I still don't have a lvl50 in CoH... and it doesn't matter to me .. its the diversity I like, and diversity with more freedom that Champions could bring to us? *cheer*
As a pen&paper roleplayer for 20 years now, I like variable character design - formed in my ideas, not in strict templates.
I guess I will stay with CoH whatever to come, just because I always did, and as I play seldom, there is enough time, to try other things/games.
Hope to see you soon(tm)

I've playing CoX from early closed beta of CoH, and still play it today.
As for Champions, I've played it since 1982. My favorite character started at 250 points, and after almost 10 years of playing him in a once a week game he ended with over 750 points of experience.
I look forward to what lies ahead.

Greetings all,
Just wanted to "check in" with all the other Chamipions Fans.
I specifically remember in the 80's, picking up a soft-cover copy of the Champion's RPG. A couple years later, I had a set of Three books covering the Champion's system. At the time, I was a huge comic book collecter and reader; I even recall some of the comic books that were out with Champion-based characters: Marksman, Giant, etc. Later still in the 80's I remember playinging (and winning) a champion's tournament at a comic book conventions. GREAT GAME!!
To be honest, I am JUMPING WITH JOY that this game is in the works. I have been playing City of Heroes/City of Villians for awhile now. I admit I like the game, but one of the big downfalls is the power custimization problems.
Why can't my lightning be green? Why can't my energy blasts be yellow? What if I want to combine super strength with gadgets?
Well, I do believe in the Champion's system, and can't wait to play it.

WHOO! Pinnale for the win!

I've never played Champions RPG, but then, there wasn't much of an RPG community in my rural home town growing up. I was a big online fiend though, with my brother and I actually using modems that you had to put a phone into the cradle to use!
I joined the COH boards as soon as I heard of the project, but I was living overseas when the game launched. As soon as I moved back to the US in July of '04, I got an account and suited up. I've been playing on and off ever since. While I appreciate the problems that CoX has, I still love the story and the effort that Cryptic and NC Soft invested in the game and I look forward to seeing Jack's influence on a 'next gen' superhero MMO.

Despite the bashing Jack gets over on the CoX boards, I for one can't wait to see how this one comes out. CoX is by any measue a great game, one I've enjoyed since closed beta, and Jack is largely responsible for that.
Absolutely stoked for this one.

I've played CoH and CoV, but the only hero RPG I've ever played is the Marvel game that came out in the 80s. I loved it, but it didn't have the ability to customize the way I'm told Champions does.
I'm really looking forward to the introduction of this game. Character customization is very big with me, as well as everyone I know who plays MMOs. The features here look very exciting. I can't wait!

Since this seems to be the intro thread.
I've been into pnp rpgs since mid eighties. Bought one of the early editions Of Champions (came in a box as i recall with several books.) I'm amazed that after all these years that the core of the system has remained the same. I played CoX through about issue 4 and then on and off since then (The Best MMO on the market IMHO). Given what Cryptic was able to accomplish with CoX, Champions Should be pretty Amazing.

I fell in love with comics at a young age (like most kids), and I jumped on the opportunity to create my very own super hero.
CoH and CoV will hold a special place in my heart for being the first MMORPG where I could make my dream a reality. Now I look forward to Champions Online opening a bright, new chapter to something I hold so dear.
Way to go Devs, things look great so far.

You may want to check into that. ;)
i tend to agree with what star says here.
i'd also like to add that plentiful respecs will help offset the newbie-self-gimp issue.
one of my favorite things to do in COH is rebuild my character and optimize his efficiency. the ability to do that regularly with a set of rules as flexible as the hero system will make the game completely addictive to folks like me. i really hope you guys are able to implement that kind of functionality as a part of what Champions Online has to offer.
seriously, i could spend days doing that stuff.
weeks even.

Hello all, longtime CoXer, longtime comic reader, longtime Champions player, etc. I chose this forum name for kicks but i really got to go back and check out my old Champions character sheets to help me recall my favorite characters. My two brothers and I, and a host of our friends, would play RPGs deep into the morning/weekend. We started with DnD, and hit many a super hero game along the way. Champions, Villains and Vigilantes, Marvel Universe were all played, but I recall Champions being our favorite. We would actually roll up random characters in V&V just to give us ideas for building characters in Champions.
Of course I recall the love of numbers (and power) leading to many a hero who had weaknesses to things our GM would never put in game (water was the big one). "Oh, it's a water campaign? Guess I'll bring somebody else...haha".
I'm as excited as all get out for this game, I hope it's worth the wait. I was reading about it in Game informer magazine last night and was blown away. The arch-nemesis system will be truly awesome if it's anything like what the article stated....
Time to go digging for rulebooks and modules!

I've played CoX on and off since beta...more off than on lately, though. I like the concept of the game, but not being able to jump, dodge and fight like a real superhero takes a lot out of the game for me. I end up just building characters and setting their costumes, running around Atlas Park for five minutes and then logging out to do it again.
That's why I have such high hopes for CO. ACTION based gameplay. :D

My first (and only) MMO was CoH and while I didn't quite get in for the first wave, I played it on and off since 2005(?). I loved the character builder (and general feel) so much, but kind of lost interest once they added crafting. Man, I hate crafting so much!
I dunno if this is going to have crafting, but I figure I might as well try to get in on the ground floor this time, now that Cryptic has moved on from CoH.

I played in a Champions campaign that lasted for eight years, running in third and then fourth edition. By the end of that period the group was... a little eensy bit overpowered.
The classic example: Avatar, the local Doctor Doom knockoff, had used a Genesis Device type of gadget to instantly terraform Mars and was trying to lay claim to the entire planet; we were asked to go in there and get him to settle for a smaller slice of the pie. On the way in, we were debating what kind of diversions might allow us to land safely.
We seriously entertained the idea of KNOCKING PHOBOS OUT OF ORBIT AND CRASHING IT INTO MARS, as a DIVERSION. We didn't do that in the end, but the mere fact that we COULD HAVE says something about the game at that point. :p
More recently, I play in CoX as a level 26 invul/stone tanker... the LINCOLN MEMORIAL! :)

HERO has been a standard PnP in my arsenal for quite some time, though lately M&M has been more appealing in my old age. I still "think" in HERO terms even.
CoX has been a new, how should I say, vent for my Superheroics since moving away from a gaming group of little equal. I pour my heart into it's Tanker class, trying to create "Bricks" worthy of playing (and having a hell of a time :D).

I did play some Champions back in my day, since my gaming groups ravenously devoured a lot of game systems over the years. It's been ages, but I do remember liking it.
I'm far newer to CoH/CoV, although sis played for some time before I inherited the account back, and have played some on the side. I really like the customization in CoX, as other MMOs I have tried seem to like you to look like your closet sneezed your outfit on you at random with disturbing regularity. It looks like this game will combine some excellent aspects.

I am a long time COH/V player (about 4-5 years now). I have played champions for a while but that was many years ago (almost 10 or so). I have played the palladium games hero game, the old marvel table top game (feat charts anyone?!), read thru the DC heroes version... all sorts of table top RPG experience (and still... after 20 years almost of playing table top RPG games).
Love it all, but I find I have been liking it better when a computer takes care of all those messy rules and calculations. Thus I am now a MMO player. I hope to find this MMO just as thrilling as my frist... City of Heroes!

Not a clue about Champions experience-wise, but I've watched the development of CoH since it started existing in the public eye and I've been playing since a couple months prior to CoV's launch.
This is all kind of creepy, as I recently bought The Orange Box, played Team Fortress 2 for a little bit and thought to myself a day or two ago, "it would be very nice if somebody would take CoH, give it a campy, stylistic overhaul similar to TF2 and give it all the things like power customisation and what we were promised prior to CoH's launch". Then my friend links me to CO's website today.
I'm no stranger to PnP, mind you - I spend most of my free time writing and creating pointless little settings and characters of my own, and enjoyed running a couple campaigns using the d20 system. As far as using a built-in setting goes, I have enjoyed the pleasures of the old World of Darkness and have all the Promethean books but no friends who are suckers enough to play a horribly depressing game.
If we have freedom, if we have customisation, if we have a point-buy system and if I can make a robot character that is actually a f---ing robot that does not make "hurp/gurp/grah" noises when it jumps I will be wholly and completely sold. It'd be nice to make and play one of the many characters floating around in my head that doesn't get hamfisted into "well, I guess manipulating the raw forces of unreality is kinda like energy/kin".

I myself have played on and off for nearly 2 years of CoX, and I've tried probably a dozen or so MMO's, none of which could come close to the awesomeness that was CoV. While I haven't played Champions, I have played Aberrant, a super hero game in the story teller system, and have tried GURPS supers. I've also played a fair amount of DnD and Exalted among other things.
Personally, just seeing the difference between CoH and CoV, not to mention the difference between when these games first came out and how they are now, I can only imagine how incredible Champions Online will be. If any company can pull off what they are aiming for, I'd say Cryptic has the best chance.
Though to be honest, I had never really gotten into the comic book supers stuff until I came across CoV. I just never had come in contact with any comic books or anything before then. Now I've gotten more and more into it, but I still prefer to play as a super hero/villain rather than just read about them.

I too was one of the lucky ones to beta test COH, back when you had to ride the monorail all around the city and stop at each station until you reached your desired location.....I still geek out when i think about being able to fight in the Rikti invasion at the very end :D A lot of us worked very hard beta testing that game to make the changes we could suggest happen. Around three years of CoH/V, and absolutely love the game.
About the only exposure I've had to Champions was Hero System Fifth Edition, which I remember very little of except that it could be used as a decent bludgeoning weapon.
My primary desires for Champions Online would be ease of soloability and travel. I think every other MMOG I've tried (and quit) was missing in at least one of the two.

Hey all, I've been playing City of off and on since beta. I've never heard of Champions until coming to these forums...
Always been interested in playing a PnP game but could never really get into DnD. Now only if I can find some people close to where I live to play with I'd totally give it a try.
Anyways, CoX has really only held my attention because it's the only hero MMORPG that I know of. Looking forward to hearing more about ChampO.

Big CoH fan though still kind of new at the game.
I am wishing Champions all the best. Not only dose it have the potential to be a great game but it will also push the CoH people to take their game up to the next level as well.
I am very much looking forward to the next couple of years

Hi. I've been in CoH/V since Beta and while I do take breaks from time to time, i always return. I've also been a long time Champions/HERO tabletop role-player. I've bought each and every version of the rules since Champions 1. I am both extremely excited, and nervous, at the prospect of a Champions MMO.
If Cryptic can really pull it off it could a great MMO innovation. It could also be a spectactular disaster.
Finger crossed.

I played CoH back during Beta but what really drew my interest is Champions
I have been playing the PnP since I can remember. In fact I have been running the same game as a GM for the past 4 years (at least once a month). I told my players about this and they got all excited even 2 who swore to me they would never touch an MMO upon pain of torture.
My troupe is excited.. can't wait to see what happens

I have been playing CoH and Cov since release with a cpl of breaks. I am psyched about a new hero MMO. And am very interested in seeing a point buy system. Anything to make my Hero or Villian more customizable.

CoH/CoV player for 2 1/2 years on Champion server. Huge fan of comics and superhero games. Never played Champions but I plan to change that.

Was a CoH player full time from beta to until WoW came out. Then I started playing on and off, mostly with my friends whenever we got the urge. I am now officially excited for Champions though, this looks like the new hotness.

What all the other people said.
I'm still playing CoX, and I've known PnP Champions since first edition.
I'm really looking forward for this one, and hope it comes out great. :)

CoX player for 2+ years of playtime (broken up here and there when another game drew me away for a month or two). This game has me so hyped. I am going to go explode now.

Longtime Champions player, never got around to trying CoH/CoV. Not generally a MMO player, though I do play Guild Wars (I know, not exactly an MMO.)
I'm hoping the payment model will be more like Guild Wars as I am not a fan of monthly payments, but honestly I'm not expecting it; few games seem to go that route and most of the fan base here is probably used to monthly payments from CoX.

I play CoX right now and this game looks really interesting. It would be nice to get out of the restraints of the city and explore an entire world. Its also a big deal to be able to customize so very much of your character down to attack animation and colors of powers. role play seems inevitable as well. I can see this game pulling me away from CoX if executed properly, and keeping me from trying the star trek MMO. Cryptic you got big shoes to fill.

I've played City of Heroes since launch and City of Villains since beta. I looked through some of the older tabletop super hero RPGs while I was growing up, but haven't actually played a tabletop RPG. I'm something of an on again off again player in City of at the moment, spreading time between it, WoW, and my console games (currently addicted to Mass Effect). So far, I haven't managed to max any character levels in City of (altitis extremus), but did manage to hit 70 in WoW.

Hi people,
I'm also a "City of" player, where I'm on the Champion server. Sort of fitting no?
Previously I was a Heroes Unlimited player (more when it was blue-book than after it became white-book) and collected a small ton of GURPS Supers rulebooks.
Just poking my nose here to find out what is going on.
Upsen.

CoH player for 3+ Years, been there since the beginning. After hearing about this all I can say is...I cant wait! I hope the multiple things that caused so many issues in CoH are addressed here. Learn from your mistakes and create a good game guys!

Ah, yeah. I've played CoX off and on ever since it was released. Hadn't heard of the HERO system until recently, although I'm familiar with Mutants and Masterminds - which is a bit similar.
Very excited to see what Crpytic can do with Champions Online!
I can't resist...
Mutants & Masterminds is as similar to Champions as a Yugo is similar to a Lamborghini.
They both are cars, they both use gas, they both are driven...but boy is there a difference.
Of course I have been playing Champions since 1982 (still have Enemies and Enemies 2 books, okay very thin booklets) so I may be just a tad bit biased, but I don't think so. :D
I' played CoH and CoV for about two years from immediately after release in 2004 to 2006. I stopped playing when I felt the development team was way too concerned that I have fun the way they wanted it to be as opposed to letting me have the fun I would like.
Additionally, I felt that leveling on CoH/CoV took WAAAAAAAAAAAY to long. 600 hours to get a character up to level 50 was insane when there was almost 100+ different kinds of heroes you could make.
Finally, the coolest thing I remember in CoH was that giant super monster that usually took over 100 heroes to defeat and that gave out the super cool inspirations. I can't remember what his name was, but it was awesome the teamwork and the fun of those missions.

City of Heroes and Villanis player for over 3 years and counting. I cannot wait to see this game come out. It looks awesome and with Cryptic starting with a clean slate it makes it easier to bring new concepts and all of the things they learned on City of Heroes to a brand new game. Sweeeeet!

Like many others I'm a CoX player been so since shortly after Issue 3. ChillingTemper from the Pinnacle server. But I've also played another PnP Superhero game in the form of Mutants and Masterminds. I really liked the diversity the system provided and it was easy to get into from a D&D standpoint. Now I'll be spending time digging into the lore and rules of Champions.

I played a bunch of Champions when I was younger, but especially after college I just couldn't find a good group to play with.
As for CoX, I'm a bit of an addict. I have, with the exception of a 3 month gap, been playing regularly since Beta. I'm not a power player nor a RPer, so I'm one of those middle ground people everyone hears about ;)

I played City of Villains primarily. I was never one for the "goody two-shoe" image because it was... well, it was CORNY. I always had to be the insidious Mastermind (yes, I played a Mastermind) that twisted events like a puppet for a grand scheme... and yes, I felt I had to serve a higher power of sorts. I could never do the ruling. In CoV, I was one of those rare few that pledged eternal allegiance to Lord Recluse, and ENJOYED it.
Hopefully though, the customization for this game blows CoX out of the water. Even in that game, I felt my options were... lacking. I went with simple, yet something to stand out and show I was a villain, not some twit who was a pseudo hero. The costume I'll post practically SCREAMS "evil" to everyone:

Yeah, that was me. I was one of those primary villains on the Guardian server. Random bouts made me a force to be reckoned with, and nothing short of an Ice Tanker, TPer, or a full on assault team could drop me in the right circumstances. Even THEN, I felt lacking as a villain. Where was the diabolical plans I c
