I have been playing Champions since the old 1981 box set. I think the HERO system is the best system ever for any RPG.
I am so excited to see this in development!

I played it back in the 1990's I hope this MMO stays true to its roots.

So do I. I would love to see the system use disads, modifiers..etc. I was just flipping through my old 4th ed Champions book (which is falling apart at the binding from much use) and thinking of new characters to try! :D

I'm pretty sure the game is Champions in name and maybe spirit only. Remember, it used to be "Marvel Online" until a few weeks ago. They needed a brand.

Maybe you are correct, but some of the things mentioned makes me think that this isn't just a rehash of the MUO code.

There's the possibility they took the license for this game simultaneously to Marvel, or that they signed a deal with Champions when things got rocky with Microsoft. There are likely elements of the MUO system in the game, but nothings to say what we're seeing now started as MUO.

Yeah, that's what I mean. I don't think they took the code form MUO and just labeled it with the Champions name.
That isn't to say there might not be some reused code.

Really can't say how pumped up for this I am! Hopefully some of my old group members join me in the fight.

Heh, um yeah...Im sure they just scrapped a years plus worth of code and art assets to start over again.
But even then, it wasnt "MUO" code". It was the next supers game that Crpytic happend to be working on, with a Marvel license plugged in. When that fell apart, they wanted another license to plug in, and the developers were fans of Champions, and it worked out well for everyone. I'm cool with that.
They've already said they wont be using Champions game system mechanics for the game... the only other way it could be "true to the champions roots" is in spirit, by being a supers RPG, or maybe using some signature characters from the champions books, of which I have no knowlege, but in the end, all that is is a mesh skin.
Whatever brand you put on the box is not the reason I'll be playing the game. I'll be playing it because Cryptic is one of the incredibly small list of MMO developers who have proven their worth, and I am looking forward tremendously to the continued evolution of their Supers MMO.

You are probably right. I keep forgetting that MUO was also partly Microsoft :p, which explains why MUO was going to require Vista, and that CO isn't. Part of my thinking was that if this was built on the same code base, that CO would have to require Vista as well.
So, i'll coincide the point.

Exactly, the fallout with Marvel was just a couple of months ago. In order to already have screenshots out, means they have to use the same assets, with a different label. I am sure, the history and characters from Champions will be present, but the assets didnt change much.

Not to detract from the current tangent in the thread, but I'm really excited about this. It looks like this will offer what I liked about CoH/CoV and address the problems I had with them. The fact that you're able to create your own arch-villain and even kill them off if you get bored with them is phenomenal.
I'm gonna be keeping a close eye on this. :)

Hi guys. A little insight from a long-time HERO Games player. You are correct in assumeing that Champions Online will NOT be using a straight port of the HERO system rules. They will however be using a rule set that is heavily inspired by the HERO system. From what I understand it will be a fusion of point buy and classes. There is some information about this on the site already if you want to look around for it.
Secondly, Cryptic has purchased the rights to the Champions Universe as well as the Dark Champions Universe and all thier signiture characters so there will be elements of the PnP game in the online game. Hope that helps.

I don't know the original P&P game, but I want to play this game.
Somehow I have a strong desire for reactivating my CoH account :)

Because Champions is the only RPG that uses a point buy system?
The game mechanics will be the same Game mechanics that were in the game 2 months ago before the rebranding, when it was Marvel. The NPC skins and licensed names will be different, now with Champions flavor. Some labels might change, but Its all cosmetic... a logo to put on the box.
They could call the game "Hello Kitty Online", and it wouldnt matter...as long as it was a new Superhero RPG by Cryptic, I'd want to play it.

Always have held a love for Ye Olde HERO system. Loved my time in CoH. Really jazzed up about the thought of this game a scant year away.
I'm so stoked I may just run out and buy a copy of HERO System 5 to catch up on changes and get a feel for it again... :D
Hell, I may even reactivate my long dormant (and no doubt empty) CoH account just to get a feel for where Cryptic took that game in my time away. ;)
I hoping this takes the P&P to a level we haven't fully seen fleshed out in other MMO's. Granted you always great some of what you want and lose others. I just hope whats lost ins't determental to theoverall enjoyment of the World itself.

I'm definately excited with this game.
1. Cryptic already knows how to build a good game in the hero genre.
2. They'll build it with concepts in mind that could not be incorporated when they built COH.
3. It will likely have the type of customization available that the Champions system had.
The list could go on.
I'm just glad I heard about it this early in its creation. I might actually have some input. And I have no problem with MUO code being reused. Being a coder, I don't want to rebuild something already works well.

I whole heartedly 110% agree.
Both My brother and I were in the coh and cov betas and are playing those games currently. With the drive and passion that were behind those two games.....Cryptic is gonna have another winner. I am waiting to be thrilled yet again by super hero goodness and the singular fact that we can have an arch nemisis of our creation to plague our heroes and heroines......(nerdgasm) is going to be utterly awesome.

Put me in the "interested and optimistic" camp; while I am somewhat familiar with Champions - back in the day, my friend and I got the old Heromaker software so we could make characters for the Champions computer game that vaporwared in the early 90's, and then bought the Big Blue Book to better understand the Heromaker software - I've never actually played Champions, or any Hero System game. But I do loves me my superhero games, from Freedom Force to CoX, and as someone else posted here, I have great respect for Jack Emmert and Cryptic Studios.
Can I trade in my copy of Heromaker for some free play time...? :p
Heh, um yeah...Im sure they just scrapped a years plus worth of code and art assets to start over again.
Uh, the impression I got from the GI article is that Microsoft owns that code(1). So Cryptic *is* ignoring all the MUO work and starting fresh. Maybe using the CoX engine, or just taking all the problem-solving from MUO & CoX and starting fresh. Or maybe they already had a 3rd hero and/or CoX2 design in the pipeline, and this is it. Who knows?
That said: I, too, am surprisingly excited. I am swimming through a sea of 20 year old memories of cool Champions moments, and remembering the beauty of the character creation system.
(1) But I don't have the article in front of me, so I could be wrong.

From what I gather, Microsoft owns to code to the MUO game, but it was being developed using Cryptic's Graphics Engine. Since Cryptic owns the graphics engine it means that they can keep all work that they did on that, they just can't keep any work on the world or characters, or system design.

I've never played Champions PnP, but I used to play CoX. I must say I'm extremely excited as well and I truly hope that Champions will really shine.
