Will CO have heroes and villains at release?

No, we can only make heroes. However at level 30 we get to make our hero's nemesis, who will fight us in storyline missions.

As above, heroes only. Most likely the "nemesis" you make at level 30 will end up being a controllable villain in future patches, but for launch, it'll only be heroes.

There is PvP at launch, only it's an arena based system where you fight against other champions rather than Hero vs Villain PvP (I'd expect them to put a villain system in in the future judging by CoX, but who knows :))

One of the things we learned from our work on previous games is that, with few exceptions, most people like playing the hero. Those players who do want to play the villain don’t want to do the same thing as heroes do but with different text. So rather than dividing our project resources between two completely different styles of gameplay, we wanted to focus our effort on providing an outstanding superhero experience first and foremost.

We’ve definitely had many discussions on how we’d want to design villain gameplay in Champions Online. We’ve discussed more vigilante-style anti-heroes (a la Dark Champions) who mete out their own style of justice and often wind up on the wrong side of the law. We’ve also talked about more proactive villain gameplay where they come up with their own plans for world domination and unleash them on the world for the heroes to try and thwart (if they can). This could involve PvE and/or PvP gameplay; a lot of these things are still on the drawing board.

interview from here (http://www.boomtown.net/en_uk/articles/art.view.php?id=17834).

hope this helps :)

Seen it but I'll comment anyway.

Personally, I like the fact that they're not going to shoehorn heroic gameplay in the villain archetype. That was one of the things that grated me about CoV.

Arena based conjures up the wrong image for me. It is scenario based PvP. IE you can take the part of villains escaping from Stronghold or the heroes attempting to stop a major breakout. There may indeed be arena based combat but that sounds like people in a round, flat area duking it out to me.

You take the term 'arena based' too literally XD Arena Based combat can be used to describe instanced PvP such as battlegrounds and objective gameplay (ie CTF style PvP) not just people in a round, flat area duking it out ;)

Anyways, the fact is there is PvP at launch, obviously it won't be to everyones tastes but it's there nevertheless.

A good thing to remember here that outside of perhaps Dark Age of Camelot and (I dare say) Warhammer, most MMO's at launch have debunked PvP Systems. WoW at the beginning did not even have PvP but now a couple of years later people tend to forget that and come to expect perfection right away. If there has been anything that I have learned over my years playing MMO's it is that they need time to come into their own. No game is perfect at the beginning and improvements will need to be made. What we can hope for CO is that after Cryptic has solidified the Hero portion of Champions, then they can focus all their resources on the Villain section. With a next gen super hero game like this there are a lot more factors and expectations that need to be met as opposed to CoV and such. I have put my faith in Cryptic, I got a lot of enjoyment out of CoH and I trust that CO will only be better. Best to just enjoy our time punching in NPC villainous skulls and biding our time until we can rob that bank on Main street!

I do hope CO fix their PvP concept and the way it plays. It's a bit horrid to think of how it'll work correctly with the type of powers you can choose from, and the "action based combat". It'll be a big blur if you ask me.
