To be honest, I'm not sure either. I've never attended an open beta before--merely waited until the full-fledged title came out to decide whether I wanted to play. As far as I know, betas are free, as it's merely a testing stage of a product. But, then again, I've never experienced one to know for sure. I can say with 75% certainty that open beta testing IS free to attend, but the other 25%...well, I'm not positive.

We still have to apply for the open beta correct?

Hello Captain Eagle, Open betas are indeed free. (Generally the purpose of a beta is to get the game tested and it would be fairly nuts for Cryptic to charge players to test their game =))

Generally, once you're in the open beta, you download the client. That client goes inactive when the open beta ends, so you eventually have to guy the game if you want to play past the beta period.

Yeah, that's what the first few weeks of live are for. :p
(I kid, of course. Hopefully there will be no such issues :) )

We all know there will be an open beta, Cryptic have already stated that. When it'll be or if you need to apply for it, however, isn't known. It will be free.

You may as well apply for the beta, if you haven't done so. Maybe you can get in before the open beta begins and get a little extra time to check out the basics of the game.
Just don't let the bugs deter you. It's beta. There will be bugs.

I'd recommend anyone whos' thinking of waiting for Open Beta because there's no hope in Closed Beta to apply for Closed Beta anyway. A little birdy-dev told me they'll be inviting a lot more people soon! *crosses fingers*
