View Full Version : Control Schemes - PC vs. Console

Might as well get this out of the way now...

What sorts of changes to the control scheme are we going to see between the console version and the PC one? Obviously, some shortcuts are going to have to be made to fit controls onto the console controller, but will the PC version have full support for changing keys? Many of us have seen the dodgy console-to-PC-port where you can't change keystroke commands easily (if at all), or lack the extra maps for things that make sense on the PC but not on a console.

And just for the record, I have both a 360 and a PS3 as well as the PC, and use all fairly regularly.

EQOA is the answer to this question.

EQOA.

It wasn't as bad as people thought it was. A couple cast buttons, a modifier button (my addition, so that you could double the insta cast options), two directional scroll buttons, and you're good to go.

I'm sure the lead platform is PC.

I does raise the question though of whether the launches will be simultaneous or if the 360 launch will be later, and whether there will be cross-platform play. The latter seems unless they can really get the control scheme down. But, then again, FFXI did it.

Based off of the features bullet points and the "Furious action" article, I expect/assume the game to play much closer to Phantasy Star Online than the menu click-athon games previously explored.

Champions Online has the fast-paced gameplay normally found only in fighting or action games.

Fighting and action games aren't exactly console weakspots, the last time I've checked.

I can almost guarantee you that there will be no cross-platform play. If that were the case then you would need to be a member of LIVE for the PC and pay for LIVE as well as the monthly fee, provided that is the business model this will be having (subscription based). Now, I'm sure they want the most people to play this game as possible. 360 VS PC play negates that. Why? Unless Microsoft decides to do away with paying for XBL, don't expect to see many games coming out with 360 vs PC interplay, especially since that requires users to also be in Windows Vista, which, let's face it, not everyone is ready and willing to make the jump to.

Adam - You can play current MMORPGs on the 360 without a Gold XBL subscription. I don't think this one will be any different.

All i know is I might have an excuse to go get that 360->PC controller adapter for my wireless controllers. Whoo! ;)

PC Players can't play XBL games on a PC without GOLD.

Look at Halo 2, Shadowgate, and the like.

Yes, but FFXI players from PC and 360 can play together with neither having any sort of Live subscription. The same will likely happen here.

Agreed, gold accounts just let you play 24/7(vs just weekends for silver) and give access to content downloads sooner so I see no reason that they would require it. As was said FFXI sets the precedent of not needing one.

I don't think Cryptic wants to alienate any possible customers by making them pay two different subscription fees.

I'm just hoping that there's a bind system that while not necessarily needing to be equal to, at least comes close to the one currently in City.

It just makes it so much easier to customize each character's interface. At least for me. And at that point, you'd in theory be able to set it up how you'd want it.

In a screenshot caption from the Game Informer article it says

"The game is playable on both Xbox 360 and PC - cross-platform play will be available on day one."

Also, when the Game Informer writer is brought in to play the game he says that the play testers were all in the same room with 360s and PCs so I think they're developing the two versions simultaneously and will try to ensure that the control schemes are appropriate for each. Implying that this will not be a PC port to 360 or vice versa.

Excellent info. Hum, what do I need more, the percise control of a keyboard and mouse or the performance and frame rate of the 360? Tough call.

I suppose this means voice chat will be the norm rather than text bubbles. Wonder how they will handel local and broadcast chatting.

If Cross Platform play is confirmed (AWESOME), what I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY want to know is...

If I buy a subscription and a copy of the game for the 360 AND for my PC, will I be able to log in as my character on either, whichever I feel like that particular day... all on one paid sub?

Because that would be T-I-G-H-T. I could primarily play on the 360, but when I have to travel, I could play on my PC. Oh man, I am geeked for this game.

I am interested in how this shapes up. I love my 360, but I'll be a 'pc elitist' untill I'm dead in the ground. Until more is known I am going to default to 'cautiously optimistic', but I really want to hear more about control/interface/GUI for the PC and console versions of the game.

It took a great deal of work by modders to scrub the taint of console-compromises out of Oblivion, but it was work that well worth the effort, because it saved the game in the eyes of many PC players.

I hope they find an elegant solution that facilitates a full console-based play experiance, while not hamstringing the functionality of PC RPGing.

I play CoH, I play it a lot, in fact, probably too much.
I got RSI from the keyboard controls and switched to a PC game controller with, ummm, 12 buttons. I now only use the keyboard for chatting and /macro building, and the game plays very well, so a controller designed game would be no issue for me :).

Here I go again.

If you've seen some of my other posts, you'll know I was a FFXI addict for many years. Played on a PS2, and for a short time on my PS3. About a year before I gave it up, it was released for the XBOX 360. Don't know what it's like now, but Live Silver was free, and all it did was a straight on pass-thru of the data from FFXI server to client. Don't see why that model coudn't work for CO.
