View Full Version : How do Secret Identities work in this game?

I did a search, and looked through some threads, but I didn't find a concrete answer yet, if there is one. If I missed it, I apologize.

As a roleplayer, I am interested in being able to have a hero that can be a regular person with an average name, and then transform into their alter-ego.

Any info you can give on this would be helpful.

Again, sorry if I missed it somewhere already.

Thanks

Secret identities: is a no. There's no real use for that in the game design if you think about it in a sense any way. But like other hero games that came before this, your secret identity was usually mentioned in your bio card (if you ever decided to use it) and players could click on you and read it.

Also there is going to be ways you can create multiple costumes for your hero. so if you're really into the roleplaying or you really just want a secret identity, you can create an alt. costume to do that. hope that helps

Fail.

Read the sticky FAQ from Nexus. Secret IDs are in and involve a storyline split based on whether you have/keep a SI or not.

Cryptic said that secret identities do indeed have an impact on your game play, and having/not having one would change some mission arcs. This a while back, but they haven't said anything contradicting it as of late, so I assume it's still in.

Come on guys, read Nexus' FAQ, he has a lot of good stuff.

Hey do we get Secret identities in this game?
Yes. From what is known, in Champions Online you have the option of having a secret identity or not from creation. If you choose to have a secret identity there will be a time in your heroic carrier that will have you choose to keep your secret id or not. If you choose not to keep it your progression will shift and change onto a different path.

Here you are.

ok let's be a lil more helpful then a complete *******. and actually use my whole f***in quote next time. you don't see me editing your **** out.

POINT TO IT!

god, there's just some people who reads what they want, then tries to belittle people when they're only showing how much of a jerk they are. better yet. don't respond, i'll just wait for the game and figure it out.

Heh. Yes I was a bit harsh.

But you came across as the typical intarwebz browser who can't be bothered to read anything for themselves and see nothing wrong with other people doing the work for them. Add in spelling errors which appear to be on purpose "cuz" "kno" etc and that is the impression I got. So you got a answer designed for that type of person.

This is the internet. I don't know anything about you except what I gather from your posts. Don't want to be judged by your posts? Tough that's the way the world works. You have the choice to post the way you want. And I will reply the way I want subject to the rules and regulations of this forum.

I do like how you spell the way you want so I have to translate but yet you don't like me selectively quoting you when I was only responding to part of what you said. If you posted a wall of text on 13 different subjects should I quote the whole thing and take up half a page of the thread just to quibble over 2 lines?

This is one thing I'm looking forward to in CO. Curiouse to see how it works with your character.

So what if I don't want a secret identity? This is my concern. My character is a living Gargoyle for crying out loud :P He's hardly going to don a trench coat and top hat and walk the streets now is he...?

I hope secret identities are not forced upon us.

Just as an FYI, simply because something is in a player-created FAQ does not mean the information is correct. A FAQ is just a compilation of things someone from Cryptic has said over the last 15 months. Many such things might have changed since the comment was originally made. Weaknesses are a perfect example of that. So while it is good to have the FAQs as general guidelines it is not good to hold them up as irrevocable evidence.

Based on what they've said regarding the topic in the past, they are optional.

Nice, I didn't know about the SI portion of the game. I hope they continue with it.

Just another decision I'll have to make about my character!!!

Oh, I don't know. Ben Grim would wear a trenchcoat and hat and smoke a cigar. Could actually look pretty cool.

If done well, this could add a deeper level of character development that would attract/retain gamers. I would love to see:

Certain professions accessible via a Secret identity. I.E. reporter, scientist, wealthy industrialist playboy :p
A level of 'Stealth' where your nemesis and other adversaries pay less attention to you because hey...your not super right now.
Reputation and/or achievements (apologies for the WoW reference) for completing missions without powers. No need to alert adversaries or panic the public when accessing the secret panel behind the stairway.

Maybe. We'll see.

I mean, there was no mention of secret IDs in the Massively article (http://www.massively.com/2009/05/04/massively-hands-on-creating-superheroes-in-champions-online) on character creation.

Neither was power customization if you look at it. Or entering your Bio, and we know those are in. They focused more on costume customization more than the entire character, it seems.

No worries - Secret Identities are a favorite topic of mine - they are as integral to a Super Hero game as powers and tights!! (OK tights are optional!:p)

Yeah, I was gonna say: "No tights for my guy, thanks! Jeans and a leather jacket are what he prefers." I guess I'm not the only one who thinks that spandex can look a little...fruity? :p

it's ok. i forgive you. And i completely understand about the editing of the posts just to make sure it doesn't take up alot of space. Also from now on, I will try to use better grammer and proper spelling as to not offend you ok?

Doesn't offend me, just I tend to assume the person is either a kid or doesn't care how people take what they say.

Now on topic, I had a great idea (or at least I think it is :)) Not sure if this would be a nightmare ;) to program or not and definitely not something for launch at this stage, but as a idea for down the road....

Have "questionnaire" popup if you choose a SI that you could fill out to flesh out your SI a bit. Basically more a click radio buttons for options like spouse/kids etc. Type in the names etc. Point being is then missions could be developed that would be personalized to the Hero. Since the game would know based on the stored data that you had a wife and two kids, then it could run you thru the kidnapping mission and plug in the names of the family members. Or if you have no real family but just trying to maintain your privacy, maybe a mission where a villain has gotten some info on you and is threatening to release it if you don't help him.

Anyway, anyone think that's a good idea? I am hoping that there is something like this to help make it tad bit more like a "real" game of Champs where the GM adapts scenarios to fit the players.

I'd love to have a toggle for the name floating above your head. When in supersuit, you have "Iron Man" toggled on. Take the suit off, and you can toggle on "Tony Stark."

That leads to all sorts of other questions....Is this like City of Heroes where we are always stuck in our costume? As a roleplayer, I can't stand that. I want my secret ID to be able to put on civvies as well. Or whatever I want. Can I keep the supersuit on but remove the mask (for dramatic "I am your father" moments)?

Any word on how street clothes or "Secret ID" clothes work?

I'm interested more or less on if after the missions are done, and the sandbox wandering begins, if we will have things to do outside of flying around punching, clawing, or blasting stuff? I guess what I mean to say is, as a role player myself, I would find the game much more fun to play if I could simply choose to be a "regular Joe" once in awhile and live a sim life. Maybe today I don't want to go out and save the world, maybe I want to go to the mall, hit the club, go on a date, go fishing, or just simply take the day off to decorate my apartment or something. I think it would be highly entertaining to have a multi-aspect to the game, that does in fact cater to a sim type of gameplay, where your not just a super hero, but you also have the option to be a part of real society and to hold down a job, or to do things the normal population would do.

I really hope when you make your character that you can make a "Hero" version, and then a "Secret ID" version. Otherwise we will have Hulk's that can't go back to Bruce Banner status, or Captain Marvel's that can't go back to Billy Batson.

I'm also curious about costumes and social clothing. Say I get tired of nonstop fighting and want some relaxation at a nightclub. Can I go into Secret ID mode and then change from jeans into a tux, or a dress?

Any word on how this functions in the game? RPers (at least this one) are dying to know.

:)

Thanks!

I would imagine it'll be pretty much like it was in CoH, if you want street clothes then you make one of your costume slots have street clothes rather than a heroic costume. Names changing, probably not either. Much as it'd be a cool feature, seems like too much work for too little gain to me. Of course, they could always add it later after launch if they have the time.

I just wanted to say that choosing whether to keep your secret ID is an interesting sounding twist.
