View Full Version : Action RPG - can someone describe
If I read correctly, this is going to be an action RPG....
Historically, I'm not a big fan of action RPGs... don't like my reaction time to have anything to do with my skill at a game :p
I even get sea sick playing first person shooters (well motion sick).
I much prefer turn based RPGs/MMORPGs (up to this point anyway).
Can someone describe how this is going to work in Champions Online?
I was really excited about this game until I saw the word "action" before the word RPG. Hopefully, someone can describe how this will work.
Thanks!

for me it was quite the opposite, i relish the oppertunity to take my lightning fast reflexes online in an MMO style, it's something we've never really seen before and sounds great! if you want a super hero game thats a bit more turn based try checking out city of heroes or city of villians. I personally didn't have the patience for it :P

You're not alone in that feeling, Jimm! Check out the ""Action" MMO...what does that mean?" thread over in the Champions Online Discussion section (I think its on page 3).

I dunno. I guess it is all a matter of Preference. But hopefully this game will be able to satisfy successfully all elements via 3rd Person to 1st Person Perspective, while at the same time be quite enjoyable.

Thanks for the link!!!
I read that thread as well.
I hope that they can somehow strike a balance, but if the action goes too fast, I will not be able to play the game because of my problems with shooters
I do have (with concerns over the combat system) hopes for this game.

Wasn't Hellgate London an MMO and also an action game?
What about Tabula Rasa
I have not tried either of these games... with the first one definitely because of this issue of not liking shooters due to motion sickness... Tabula Rasa, I have thought of trying but like CO, not really sure what to make of the combat system yet.
What would be greate IMO is that if they have a way to satisfy someone like you that want's an action based RPG and someone like me that wants a more turn based (or at least slower) RPG.
As far as CoX, I did play for a while... my issues with that game were:
- Repetative Quests (While I love WoW, it could be said the same for it - if it weren't for the variety that you can do (raids, instances, quests, etc.)
- The inability to solo (WoW doesn't have the issue)
If CO can somehow solve the solo issue (or make it a non-issue) and aleviate my concerns with Action-RPGs... then SIGN ME UP

I take it to mean it will be twitch combat, such as in DDO or is supposedly in AOC. Basically, to hit you have to point your character the right direction, put your crosshairs on the target and attack, as opposed to highlight them, face the general direction, and click the smite button. For melee this usually means that your animation must cross the targets animation with the offending weapon/fist for any chance of a hit.
Just a guess of course.

The Action MMO has been attempted before with varying results.
In a way, even City of Heroes is an action MMO in that you have push-button control over the powers you engage during a fight. There's quite a bit of coordination involved, though nothing like a full-on FPS. And it isn't really turn-based, though there is a definite pacing to any battle on your part and on your opponent's.
Of course, the control in City of Heroes was illusory. For instance, if you played a blaster character and you fired off a lightning bolt in their direction, the skill of your mousing didn't so much matter as did the stats that determined your accuracy. Basically, you don't need to "aim" at a "locked" target, because the math would make the call between a hit and a miss.
You know, kind of like rolling a D20 during a table-top game.
In an FPS like Counter-Strike, every character has the same potential for damage, varied only by the type of weapon armed. In other words, you never worry about your "level five" CS player facing off against a "level fifty" CS player. The skill of the person at the PC (and possibly the speed of their connection) is all that matters.
As far as actual action MMOs go ... Tabula Rasa is probably the closest so far, though NCSoft's Dungeon Runners works in a similar fashion. Come to think of it, even ill-fated Auto Assault was action-based to an extent. But does Tabula Rasa work? From what I've played of it during beta, I would say no. The game tries too hard to please both the FPS camp and the MMO camp and ends up failing both. Because it is so hard to find a good balance between the battle mechanics of an FPS and the attribute-based fighting of an MMO.

HGL is very much an action RPG
Tabula Rasa claims to be one, but it's really just a cleverly disguised RTTB system. You can't actually dodge enemy attacks or lead enemies or anything like that.

I'll be quite happy if the game involves a lot of split second timing, but doesn't rely too heavily on accuracy. Not for myself, but for a couple of my friends who really aren't too good with twitch gameplay...Tabula Rasa and City of Heroes/Villains seemed to have fun 'action' combat compared to most MMOs.

I seriously doubt its gona be twitch, sure it may be fast but so can CoH at times be fast or at least it feels like it is as you spam a button while the recharge is going to heal attack or whatever for whatever reason thats so immediately necessary.
I'm not wishing for twitch but something faster then CoH would be nice too many times I've sat for a second watching my powers recharge or course don't even bother with brawl because it sucks.
