I'm just wondering what type of powerset varieties this game will have compared to CoH/V.

From the posted Hero and Villain we know of the following.

Flight, Armor, Super-Strength, Energy Blasts, Portable artillery, Superhuman intellect, Super-strength, Armor, Flight, Destroyer blasts, Particle cannons, Sensory overload ray, Tangleweb projector.

The energy blast power of set appears to also include an energy sword. That one belongs to defender and his screen shot shows him wielding a blue energy sword.

You think you could throw us a link to the post, Drac?

Ok, here (http://www.champions-online.com/heroes/defender) is the link to defenders web page on the site.

And here (http://www.champions-online.com/img/screenshots/defender1.jpg) is the link to the screen shot of him using an energy sword. The caption of the picture even says it is Defender's Energy Sword.

Since Defenders powers a listed as this: Flight, Armor, Super-Strength, Energy Blasts, Portable artillery

The only power that could be providing that sword is the Energy Blasts. My guess is that Energy Blasts is a pool of powers you can pick from and one he picked is energy sword.

There isn't really a post, per se. Mostly, at this point, we're mining Dev comments on vague possibilities and the screenshots/bio for the hero/villain on the main site.

It's possible Defender's sword is part of his blast option, also possible it's simple a basic melee option he has much like Brawl was available to every hero/villain in CoX.

I am gonna go with Portable artillery for the sword.

A sword isn't really much of an artillery weapon lol

Sensory overload ray... man, I can imagine getting hit with that.. and everything looking like the original "drunken" code from EQ. All distorted, tunnel vision, swaying about when you try to move...

wait a sec.... that *was* the game I was dealing with.. right?

edit: Wouldnt consider the sword as "portable artillery" either. Although reading through the background and desc, it makes mention of shoulder rockets.. Some kind of costume attachment we're not seeing yet, or maybe they "pop out" when activated.

The Game Informer Article mentions a shoulder gun that pops out of a robotic arm.

Hmm maybe some of those powers are exclusive to those characters but not available to the players? Just my thoughts to be honest. :) Thats how I see the main characters being with their own exclusive powers, while we have an array of powers to choose from

I am gonna go with Portable artillery for the sword.

It would Appear that Nexus's comment has fallen upon the part of the population that is deaf to sarcasm.

Amazing. Power customization. Power sets we've been asking for since launch. Ugh. If this goes as good as it could go then CoX has a problem.

Don't forget the mini-turrets that pop out of shoulder armor :-)

has there been an update as to the power sets? Tried searching the forums but came up with zilch.

There's a lot of room for variety within those power sets. We know there is darkness powers, and those are probably under "energy blast."

The Devs have also said there are whip-weapons too, including things like mummy wraps. We've probably not even scratched the surface in terms of what powers are available.

I don't think they are Energy Blast. The darkness powers I saw at gencon were a sort of Dark Armor, and a sort of Singularity Generator that could sort of pull enemies towards a selected point in space. That second one didn't seem to work very well but I didn't watch it for long.

This could be applied to a lot of the features spoken about for CO. I hope at least most of them make it in for launch.

It will be the downfall of CoX mainly because these features were supposed to be in CoX but didn't happen. :D

Just because the posts asking about it seem to be bothering me, the portable artillery is shown in Defender's comic origin

You know... I think you're all looking at the whole powerset thing wrong... I think it may currently be a bit much to assume that there are those sorts of hard groupings like there are in CoX. The GenCon powers for instance, while thematically linked, didn't seem to be linked by gameplay at all. Now, there may be some powers that do have other powers as prerequisites, or some buffs that make those groupings more important, but short of that, they seem to be mostly linked in name only. In the end we may need to talk about the different powers individually rather than speaking about them in terms of powersets. Still some stuff that's unclear of course, and they haven't shown off how power progression works yet, so they may be more tightly bound than they appear... but for the time being, it doesn't seem that way.

The energy sword btw, is part of some sort of mentalist/psionic projection themed set. And there doesn't seem to be any requirements that you take any of the other powers in order to get it.

Am i missing something? You listed super strength, armor and flight twice. Also, flight is its own set? Where does the other travels like super speed and super jump fall in? Super Strength?

CosmicGirl

i doubt there will be any "Sets" in the game...since you can select ANY power you want. but mabye some powers have to be chosen to get the more powerful powers from a power.

like hover would lead to flight (as in CoX)

Well since that was copying the two from the front page I listed every power from each character. Thus the duplication of powers. We don't currently have a full or even partial power list beyond that. Unless someone thought to grab one from the demo's at comic con.

check out the articles on the front page on of them specifically answers this question.

by Randy Mosiondz, Lead Designer of Champions Online

There isn’t really “powersets” per se, at least not in the CoH sense. There are powers of different types that built around themes (fire, electicity, munitions, sorcery, power armor) but you can mix and match them freely. If you want sorcery, pistols and martial arts, you can do that.

We’re still in Alpha right now so we’re still revising, merging, and splitting how powers in general are organized, so it’s hard to put names on powers to date. We’ll be putting out a dev article on the Cryptic website when things are a bit more stable in terms of development.

hope this helps :D

So Power armor is there... w00t.

EDIT: I wonder if Power Armor will have it's own effects that override your Costume, hm... will be interesting to see.

Power armor will be awesome. Maybe power armor with an energy blade? Can anyone say Mech wars baby! I want to make a Glitterboy suit...

The usual ranged fighter, healer, and tank is in every MMO game and wouldn't be complete w/o the three. Also AoE & DoT fighters are necessary, imo.
