Idea for Cryptic: Pre-release character creation

After seeing the character creator video and having read a lot about the character creator experience I was thinking it would be great if Cryptic did what SOE did with EQII's release. There was a pre-order (as usual) that contained the character creator as a stand-alone app that allowed you to save a template file to load for later use.

I'm thinking, that one, it would give Cryptic a big pre-order campaign boost to include such a thing, and two would give us a chance to work on making our characters before the game launches since it will probably take a LONG time to do that. Win Win, IMHO.

I think they're already doing this, and calling it an open beta. I'm not sure though.

This is what I created a thread about a couple days ago. This would not be open beta, unless you were able to transfer your beta builds to the live game.

I believe what the OP is saying is simply allowing access to the live version of the games character creation system, letting players build heroes and then just shutting off the "enter world" button. This would allow us to pre-build and be ready for release.

From the postings in the thread I had, it seems this idea was broached but never really answered from a dev standpoint as to whether or not it would happen.

Welcome!! My first post here was about the same thing

...someone will arrive shortly that will direct you to the very long thread about this very thing. It is huge, everyone wants it, there is one dev response in it, it happened on like the 3rd page (said it sounded like a great ide, and they would consider it), and hasn't been commented on again. in case you don't want to read through that entire thing

I think a free to download character creator similar to what they did with spore would be a great form of advertising.

Cause I'm too lazy right now to hunt out the other threads people have mentioned.

Open beta is a full game download. The transition from beta to release for anyone in the beta will consist of a patch and entering all your card details and CD-Key and what-have-you. You would of course be able to keep any saved costume templates you make, it's the serverside characters actually in the game that would be lost.

Open beta phase is a fully functional and saveable costume creator by simply being the entire game itself. If the game itself doesn't let you save the templates of your costumes/characters, then you're gonna have no chance of any standalone program being able to upload them in.
