Default City of Heroes' Matt Miller takes a stab at CO

For those who haven't heard (or seen) yet, Hero Con 2009 brought to light the COH expansion pack Going Rogue, but also a very funny, yet stabbing comment from Matt Miller.

In a presentation, Matt Miller announced a new power set for COH: GR called "Demon Summoning", and said "we were going to call it Clown Summoning" - the crowd laughs and he follows my saying "But we'll leave the silly stuff to the other superhero MMO".

I'm unsure of Matt's relationship with Jack, but has something going on behind the scenes that I'm not aware of? Did Jack leave on bad grounds, or was this just a light-hearted joke for the laughs, and no bad intentions?

Still, funny he'd mention CO like that.

Yes, leave the interesting humor to the other game. Please.. At least someone can do it right.

Agreed. The thing I love about CO over COH is of course all the great gaming aspect ugprades, but also the fact that there is humor in this game that actually works. Foxbat is completely funny, and any mission with him always makes me giggle.

There's a lot of fun & very family-friendly humor in CO that COH could and will never do.

Seems liek Good-natured ribbing to me.
I could be wrong, though.

COH takes itself a little too seriously... IMHO

Apparently that's a sentiment shared by the execs. Or.. the other way around? Either way = CO is better.

Maybe that's the sore spot. I'm sure it already has a broader depth of customer base. Sorry, but if I had to see one more blue-outlined random level that had nothing but boxes. Or one more cookie-cutter sewer.. I was going to scream.

I'm not sure of the exact reasons for Jack leaving CoX but I Do know as a long time player of it that the palyer base were very very happy to see him go. He had this thing about his story bible and that no matter what if it wasn't his vision wasn't' in his story bible it was never going to happen. A lot of really great stuff happened after Jack left. the Crafting system came in, something Jack swore he'd never allow. the Mission architect (well debates on this being good or bad rage on the CoX boards). All in all I think Jack having left CoX under whatever circumstances was a good thing for it. As for his relationship with NcSoft and Matt "Positron" Miller. Not a clue.

Crafting was in well before Jack left.

Mixed feelings about that one myself. I was excited to see it, but I eventually left because it became very hard to find a team that wasn't about AE farming.

Oddly enough, a lot of the stuff that's getting in lately (server transfers, power customization, switching sides) are things that current CoH devs said would never happen for technical reasons... Seems like they're scrambling to update their game engine (which is a good thing, IMHO).

I'm guessing it was just friendly ribbing.

Ribbing or not, he's got a point: this game IS silly. I keep telling my friends it feels less like "The Dark Knight" and more like the 60's Batman TV series with Adam West. In fact, I would not be surprised in the least to find "Bat Repellent Shark Spray" as an actual, equippable device received in Lemuria.

This game has some epic moments to be sure, but I frequently find myself wishing it was a little more serious. But that's just a matter of personal taste.

The problem with a game taking itself seriously is that the critics do too. I just read in Gameinformer about the CO and they were pretty even-handed (IMHO) as far as the good and bad. But, in the end, it's about the ambience of the game itself.

I'm delighted to see they have the NPCs talking to each other with quotes from halflife 1.. I thought that was just the best stuff to stand there and listen to some of the random conversations the scientists would have before the cascade. And the shout-outs to other movies like (recently) I noted there was a set of three guys named Vince Lortho, Zuul, etc.. from ghostbusters. I thought that was hilarious.

Dunno, if you take the game too seriously you end up disappointed because it's not real.. not even slightly realistic. So why bother with making it serious? That's one of the things that really ticked me off about CoH.. well, besides the fact there was ZERO tutorial and I left almost 4 months later without even understanding what costume pieces were or how to "equip" them. It was way too serious. The players were way too serious about the small bit of PVP.. and it was a major grind.. I mean.. I was so tired of seeing snakes in CoV and how dark everything was.. give me a break.

And their halloween content consisted of doors that usually don't open having monsters in them. WOWZER!

But not every game is for everyone.
